HABING KATUTUBO

Habing Katutubo, which means "indigenous weaving", is an advocacy project started in 2019 by a small IP (Indigenous People) community of creative women sector in Baguio City. It is an IP led project that called for the like-minded IP and Non IP advocate of indigenous ways, culture and traditions.

OBJECTIVES

  • To build stronger connections between indigenous communities and the wider public, cultivating mutual respect and appreciation for cultural heritage.

  • To raise awareness of indigenous wears and tapestries, inspiring appreciation and understanding within the broader community.

  • To promote the heritage art of weaving through onsite demonstrations and interactive workshops, creating opportunities for community members to engage with and learn from weavers.

  • To champion hand-woven tapestries of local weavers from across the country in ready-to-wear and contemporary fashion designs by featured designers, strengthening the connection between weavers and the fashion industry.

  • To conduct a fashion show showcasing authentic and properly worn indigenous wears of different Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines from Northern, Central, and Southern Philippines, celebrating cultural diversity and encouraging inter-community dialogue.

  • To create opportunities for event suppliers, artists, and artisans participating in this event, facilitating collaboration and networking within the creative community.

  • To contribute to the tourism economy by ensuring the participation of people from the fashion and weaving industries from across the country, driving cultural exchange and promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit local communities.
